Worth the drive, for the right job
West Chester and the Philadelphia suburbs are ninety minutes from the shop. That rules out single small installs and rules in whole-room millwork packages — which is stated here plainly rather than discovered at quote stage.
Travel policy
What travels, and what does not
Worth the drive
- A full millwork package with mechanisms in it
- Two or more mechanisms in one house
- A hidden door with associated casework
- A whole-room build with wiring and finish work
- Anything where I am on site for several consecutive days
Better served locally
- A single install-only subcontract
- An hour of adjustment on someone else's mechanism
- Warranty work on equipment I did not supply
- Anything that needs same-week attendance
If a project sits in the second column, I will say so within a day and, where I can, point you at someone closer. That is a better outcome than a price built to talk you out of it.
Chester County stone
Walls that are two feet thick and not remotely flat
A good deal of the older housing out here is fieldstone, sometimes with a frame addition or three attached to it. Those walls have no cavity, no consistent thickness and no straight line anywhere in them, and a mechanism that assumes any of the three will bind within a season.
The work is therefore mostly freestanding or furred-out: a cabinet lift built to sit against a wall that is out of plumb by an inch and a half, scribed to the stone so the gap reads as intentional. That is a millwork problem with a mechanism in it, which is the specific combination this shop exists for — and it is why larger scopes out here work well and single installs do not.
Questions
West Chester specifics
Because this is a one-person shop and the drive is about ninety minutes each way. A $600 install-only subcontract does not survive three hours in a van, and pretending otherwise would mean either a bad price for you or a rushed job. A whole-room package absorbs the travel without either of those.
As a rough line: a full millwork package with a mechanism in it, two or more mechanisms in the same house, or a hidden door plus associated casework. If you are not sure, describe it — I will give you a straight yes or no rather than a quote designed to discourage you.
The post-install adjustment visit is priced into the job from the start, the same as everywhere else. Beyond that, service calls out here are batched — I would rather come once for three things than three times for one, and I will tell you honestly when I am next in the area.
Yes, and this is the sort of work the travel exists for. A designer specifying a concealed screen into a stone house needs someone who will measure it properly and say no when the wall cannot take it, which is worth a drive from either direction.

Describe the whole scope, not just the lift
Out here the scope decides whether the job works for both of us. Tell me everything that is in the room and you will get a straight answer within a day.
